Renault working on MX-5 competition
Renault decided that is was time for the company to have a word to say in the drop-top market. As Mazda MX-5 is with no competition, especially after the MR2 Roadster was discontinued last summer, Renault will bring a new two-seat convertible sometime in 2009.
The new model will be inspired by the Wind concept, first unveiled in 2004 at the Geneva Motor Show. It will be more refined compared to the Sport Spider produced between 1996 and 1999.
The new two-seater will feature a fabric or folding metal roof. It will be powered by a wide engine line-up to cater for a range of buyers, from budget-conscious motorists to those who demand sizzling performance. Entry-level variants are likely to be equipped with small, four-cylinder powerplants, while top-of-the-range cars will come with the Renaultsport Clio 197’s high-revving 2.0-litre unit.
