The Mustang isn’t exactly known for cutting-edge, innovative technology. Hell, Ford’s most famous performance car just got independent rear suspension back in 2015 with its sixth generation. Now, it’s looking like the latest Shelby GT500 might take another step into the future by axing the manual transmission option outright.

The Full Story

When it comes to the cog swaps, the dual-clutch automatic transmission is often the go-to pick for just about any modern performance vehicle. It makes sense - not only does it offer the around-town ease of just two pedals, but the dual-clutch setup is often far quicker with the shifts than even the best drivers working a manual.

The rumor is backed by a recent post made by our friends over at Jalopnik, which cite an unnamed source “familiar with internal spec sheets.” What’s more, back in May, we covered a video posted to YouTube wherein a camo-clad Shelby Mustang GT500 burbled its way around public roads, shifting through the gears at a surprisingly quick rate of speed, leading to speculation that the new pony car was equipped with either a new seven-speed DCT unit, or possibly the same 10-speed automatic that Ford shares with GM.

According to Jalopnik’s source, the gearbox in question here is a seven-speed DCT, but it won’t come from the current Ford GT - rather, the Shelby will source it from somewhere else. Jalopnik points to the Tremec TR-9007, as it has all the right specs for the application.

Top speed will hit 190 mph, while a carbon fiber driveline will keep things zinging to redline. Curb weight will be well over 4,000 pounds. Look for the 2019 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 to arrive sometime next year.
