In what amounts to a digital victory lap, Mercedes-AMG isn’t done puffing its chest about its record-breaking conquest of the Nurburgring. Only a few days after the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series snatched the production car lap record from the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, Mercedes-AMG has released the on-board video of the supercar’s record-setting lap time. GT3 racer Maro Engel piloted the GT Black Series to a record-setting lap time of 6:43.61, edging the Aventador SVJ’s 6:44.97 lap time by 1.36 seconds.

By now, everyone has probably heard about it. The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ’s reign as the fastest production car to lap the Nurburgring is over. There’s a new Lord of the Ring, so to speak, and it’s the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series.

This is a remarkable achievement on Mercedes-AMG’s part. The automaker has been camping out at the Nurburgring over the past few weeks, hunting down existing records and setting new ones in the process. A few moons ago, the automaker claimed the fastest “luxury class” vehicle title with the AMG GT 63 S Four-Door, edging out the Jaguar XE Project 8 in the process.

Now, the overall production car lap record has fallen, and it’s Mercedes-AMG that now rules the roost.

How did the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series beat the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ’s record around the Nurburgring?

First, we have to look at the car in question and, more importantly, what it’s capable of. The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine that produces 720 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. That’s just one part of the equation, though. The GT Black Series is known for having one of the most sophisticated suspension setups among performance cars in its class. For this run, Mercedes-AMG — and driver Maro Engle — squeezed every advantage out of the supercar’s advanced electronic assist features. Is that an underhanded move? Perhaps. Are these features part of the AMG GT Black Series’ production-car status? Yes.

Ultimately, we see how Engle was able to drive the supercar around the ‘Ring through this onboard video. You can tell how much effort, focus, and outright driver skill is needed to set a blistering lap time around a race track that measures almost 13 miles long. Engle, though, was complete up to the task, maneuvering the car with such skill and aplomb. He even reached speeds of 193 mph, which isn’t that far off from the supercar’s 202-mph top speed.

Engle pulled off a flawless lap around the ‘Ring, wrestling the lap record away from the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ. How long the AMG GT Black Series is going to keep the record is a different question altogether, especially with Lamborghini just announcing the successor to the Huracan Performante, the Huracan Super Trofeo Omologata.
