Elon Musk is thinking of building a retro drive-in restaurant and theater at a new Tesla Supercharger in Los Angeles. It’s the latest in a series of “ideas” that Musk has proposed in recent years. While it’s not exactly as bold as inhabiting Mars or sending a Tesla Roadster to space, it does come at a time when Tesla is pushing to have more amenities at its Supercharger stations.

Musk’s plan to turn Tesla’s Supercharger stations into a piece of a bigger retail establishment is a good idea. It follows the same “super gas station” concept that now includes restaurants, convenience stores, coffee shops, and, in some cases, actual retail stores. We’ve seen them along on the side of highways and freeways all over the country. We’ve even seen them in other countries too.

A Supercharger station that businesses and amenities like these could be a good thing for Tesla owners because charging their cars often take longer than filling up a traditional car with fuel. So while passing the time, they can either get a bite, do some activities, or if Musk has his way, watch a movie in a drive-by theater. The man’s even taking suggestions on Twitter, including the possibility of putting in a menu that can pop up from the Tesla’s digital display as soon as the driver enters the Supercharger station.

There are so many possibilities that Tesla can look into in this sphere. To its credit, it has already started expanding some of its Supercharger stations to include these amenities. One of these stations, located in Kettleman City, already has a lounge with a cafe for owners. There are also plans to reserve a section of the area to allow food trucks to come into the station.

This is one of those plans by Musk that I’m fully onboard with. I wouldn’t even be against adding a car wash service at these Supercharger stations, something that Tesla was actually working on. In the end, the more variety these stations have is going to better in improving customer experience in these charging stations.
