The M5, the most potent 5 Series sedan, is at the end of its lifecycle and may enter the new eight-generation along with a Touring model by the end of 2024. A report from the Bimmerpost suggests the same, and if it is true, the M5 Touring will enter its third generation after a 14-year hiatus, and it could do so with a hybridized V-8 under the hood!

The M3 Touring just launched in June 2022, and we have already heard about the upcoming M5 Touring from a trusted forum member of Bimmerpost, ynguldyn. For now, it is undoubtedly a rumor, but the user has been known for his accuracy in the past. He also claims that a hybridized S68 engine will power the G99, the internal codename for the M5 Touring. The same 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 powers the current M5 saloon, with a power output of at least 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. So we expect a nice power bump to about 670 horsepower, including the added electric power from the motors. The upcoming BMW XM will also have the same plug-in hybrid V-8 setup, with 750 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque.

Unlike the M3 Touring, which just entered production for the first time, the M5 Touring through two generations in the past with different powertrains. There was a 3.8-liter straight-six engine that powered the first-generation (1992–1995) E34 M5 Touring, and it was replaced by a 5.0-liter V-10 engine in the second-generation (2006–2010) E61. Unfortunately, the first two generations of the M5 Touring were rare, and BMW produced only 1961 examples of them. Therefore, we believe that the rumored M5 Touring will be a limited production run, just like the new M3.

The forum member also confirms that the eighth-generation M5 saloon will hit the market as early as 2024, and the M5 Touring will join a couple of months after the sedan’s launch. We strongly believe that BMW’s M division wanted high-performance wagons side-by-side with its other M cars to compete with the Mercedes-Benz C63/E63 Estate and the Audi A4/A6 Avant. But sadly, like the M3 Touring, the upcoming M5 Touring will probably not be available in the United States.
