Rumor Has It That BMW Is Working on an i5 Touring

Wagons are still very popular outside of the United States and an i5 Touring could be a huge hit

The next-gen BMW 5 series has been spied numerous times in 2021 despite the fact that the current-generation model was just updated. We’ve also recently seen the i5 – the 5 Series EV that will be sold alongside the traditional 5 Series- but now we’ve learned that the i5 won’t be just an electric sedan – there’s actually more to it. And, by more, I mean more interior space and cargo room.

BMW’s touring models are generally attractive and well received – so much so that they are very popular in Europe and a lot of other places outside of the U.S. market. As such, it should come as no surprise that a new report – this time from BMW Blog – tells a story about a BMW i5 Touring that will be joining at least two other i5 sedan models similar to the concept behind the i4 Gran Coupe.

Details are still quite speculative at this point, but with the new 5 Series launching in 2023, the 5 Series Touring lineup won’t hit the road until 2024. Like the 5 Series Sedan, the Touring lineup will feature some electrified powertrains. The i5 Touring will likely offer similar trim levels with varied power output (and electric range). There could also be an M Performance model like the i4 M50, for example, and that could offer as much as 500 horsepower, AWD, and more than 300 miles of range.

BMW is also planning to take the 5 Series’ interior more upmarket for the next-generation, and the i5 – in all body styles – will benefit from this as well with a more luxurious cabin, more metal time, and more glass. BMW could also be planning to make the 5 Series and i5 capable of level 3 autonomy, but that’ll probably arrive in Europe long before the United States due to regulatory reasons. As for the i5 Touring, we’re willing to bet it’s going to be a hit and can’t wait to see what it offers.
