Lexus is turning its attention to crossovers and SUVs from sedans and coupes. Rumors are swirling the automaker will debut a production version of the UX concept as early as this March at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. The UX will slot under the NX crossover to be Lexus’s entry-level model.

The UX crossover will join Lexus’ recently debuted three-row variant of the RX crossover and the new two-row (less expensive) version of the Lexus LX 570 SUV. Another crossover is also in the works based on the LF-1 Limitless Concept. That model would become Lexus’ flagship SUV, even ousting the $90,000 LX 570.

The production version of the UX Concept will likely retain the overly aggressive appearance. Small changes will take the edge off but expect a very radical design. Lexus has given this treatment to all its vehicles with mixed reactions but respectable sales.

Expect to see a full suite of active safety systems within the UX crossover, too, including adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, an available 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. We’re also hoping for a reimagined infotainment Enform system that foregoes the troublesome joystick controller for something more tactile such as a simple touchscreen. If the interior of the UX Concept is to be believed, it seems Lexus is already on its way to accomplishing that.

Drivetrain choices will likely include a standard gasoline model and a gasoline-hybrid system. Toyota/Lexus has built a big reputation on hybrid drivetrains, so we’re not expecting anything less for this compact, entry-level, luxury crossover.
