Almost anything with Tesla stamped on it is hot these days, and the EV auto giant's sedan, the Model 3 is no exception. But, you know what's even hotter? Well, a Model 3 with Tank tracks of course, which is exactly what The Real Life Guys from Germany has done.

Clearly, these folks are into the category of doing some pretty crazy stuff on their channel, I mean they've done everything from putting together a homemade submarine to a bathtub with a rocket. This Model 3 with tank tracks follows that same theme.

Tesla is on a bit of a roll in Europe and it was only recently that brand new Model Y's started rolling off the production line in Germany. Elon Musk himself was present at the Brandenburg facility, i.e Giga Berlin to personally hand over cars to customers.

Clearly, the brand will begin to make way inroads as more Tesla's appear on the road on the continent and this DIY project by a bunch of German nutters sure should help.

The Premise

One of the guys on the team owns a Model 3 and just for fun, they decided to modify it to go far afield off-road. Now, it would be foolish to use a brand spanking new Model 3 for the build, so the guys instead trick their friend into thinking that it is indeed his car that they'll be using for the build. However, another donor Tesla Model 3 was borrowed for the build.

We have previously seen Tesla's on tracks before, but these guys decided to go the extra mile and build out a full-blown Model 3 on tracks. They started by building out the box frame that will hold all the mechanical components like the pulleys, chains, sprockets, suspension springs, and the tracks themselves. After a few days at the shop, the first track was ready. Having tested it out in the wilderness, as you'll see in the video, the guys got down to building the second one.

With the tracks ready and the donor Tesla on site, it was now just a matter of plug and play, right? Umm, not really. If it was that easy, I'm sure there'd be a market for such mods. Anyway, with the tracks so high off the ground, the folks had to come up with a way to get the Tesla higher up.

They made use of a bunch of wooden crates stacked on top of each either. They tried for three long hours to get everything to line up and it was crucial that they got the axles on the Tesla to line up with the final drive of the tracks. This rudimentary approach got them nowhere, which is why a more conventional scissor-style lift was used instead and this time around, everything worked out perfectly.

The End Result

Behold, the Tesla Model T was finally ready. You can burn through the video in just over eight minutes, but what you see here is the result of a month in the shop and a lot of trial and error. The numbers are truly astonishing. But apart from the obvious changes, the massive tracks a lot more were slapped on the Model T.

Take the winch upfront, for instance. It can pull up to 6 tonnes or 13,224 lbs, which coincidently also happens to be how much this goliath weighs. This Tesla now sits, a frankly astonishing 31-inch off the ground. That extra bit of ground clearance should surely make help this EV go far beyond its natural habitat.

To Sum It Up

Wwatching this build come together reminded me of my Mechanix builds from when I was a boy, only this time, it's scaled up 1:1. Being a mechanical engineer myself, I do have some experience working in the shop. But this project is on another level. The final reveal with all the fireworks truly was truly dramatic.

Now, all that needs to be seen is how this beast of an EV will perform out in the wilderness, perhaps in the upcoming video. Its sheer size gives me a reason to believe that the Model T might be able to give the Cybertruck (when it arrives that is) a run for its money.
