If for nothing else, nobody can accuse James Glickenhaus of being boring. He was the brains behind the Ferrari-Enzo based, Pininfarina-designed P4/5. He was also the man who brought the SCG 003 to life. Now, Glickenhaus is turning his attention to the off-road segment with plans to build a modern road-legal version of the Boot off-roader that Steve McQueen famously raced in back in the ’60s.

Those who have memories of the original Baja Boot remember it as an off-road marauder that shot to fame because of its association with McQueen. It wasn’t eye candy, but it did possess a menacing 350 cubic-inch V-8 engine that produced 450 horsepower’s worth of testosterone. Fast forward 50-plus years and the modern-day Boot will be built by Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus, the same company that gave us the SCG 003 supercar and the upcoming 004S three-seater sports car.

It’s unclear how much inspiration SCG will draw from the original Boot, but the company did say that the reinvented, 177-inch long model will feature a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8 engine to go with 20 inches of suspension travel, a selectable four-wheel drive option, and a few interior amenities, including heating and air-conditioning. Renderings of SCG’s plans also show a four-door version that looks like a smaller, stripped-down version of the Hummer H3. The company is also planning to build a pair of Boot-based special edition models, called the SCG Volcano. These specialized terrestrial warriors are expected to be part of what the company says is “a record attempt up The Volcano,” a possible reference to the Ojos Del Salado volcano in Atacama, Chile where the world altitude record sits at around 22,000 feet.

For those who aren’t interested in having their lungs explode because of the record attempt, there are ways to get your hands on an SCG Boot in the future. Thanks (partly) to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s rules on low-volume manufacturers, SCG is free to build street-legal versions of the SCG Boot provided that there are customers who want one for their own version of off-road mayhem. There’s no specific timetable on when these cars will hit the road, but SCG is already targeting either 2019 or 2020. Likewise, pricing is still up int he air, though the number that’s currently being thrown around is about $100,000.
