Seat unveiled its sporty Leon FR at the Madrid Motor Show yesterday and announced it will cost from $31500 when it goes on sale in July.

That buys a 197bhp petrol-powered version of the car which uses the same engine as the $37100 Golf GTI. A 168bhp diesel is also on offer for $32500

The manufacturer also confirmed that a hotter Cupra version of the car, producing around 240bhp, will make its first appearance at the London motor show in July.

The FR is set apart from the rest of the Leon range by a honeycomb grille at the front, sporty 17-inch alloy wheels and sports seats. There’s also FR branding on the steering wheel and gearknob, and white dials.

The previous generation FR accounted for almost half of all Leon sales, so the newcomer is an important addition to the range.
