In October 2020, Mercedes-Benz took the brand-new AMG GT Black Series onto the Nurburgring to set a new lap record for production cars. In November, the Germans confirmed the record at 6:43.616 by releasing a video of the run. Almost two months have passed since then and the German firm is giving us a "behind the scenes" look at the record run and how the AMG GT Black Series was prepared for its impressively fast lap.

The 12-minute video gives us an in-depth look at how Mercedes-AMG prepped the Black Series coupe for the Nurburgring record and shows never-before-seen footage of the car on the iconic German track. Members of the AMG team also talk about some of the car's features and how some components have been specifically designed for the Black Series, currently the most extreme AMG GT model ever built.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is the fastest production car on the 'Ring

Exactly 1.36 seconds quicker than the previous record holder, the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, the AMG GT Black Series is now the quickest road-legal production car on the famous German track. The German company broke a record that was a little more than two years old.

The AMG GT Black Series was also impressively quicker than pure-bred sports cars and even supercars. It’s almost four seconds faster than the Porsche 911 GT2 RS and five seconds quicker than the Radical SR8 LM. The German coupe also crossed the finish line almost 13 seconds quicker than the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and more than 13 seconds faster than the Porsche 918 Spyder. Making things that much more impressive, the Black Series was quicker than the race-spec AMG GT3.

The ultimate Mercedes-AMG GT

The Black Series is the ultimate iteration of the Mercedes-AMG GT, sitting above the recently discontinued GT R in the lineup. Powered by a retuned, twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V-8, the Black Series model hits the street with a massive 720 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque at its disposal. That's 143 horsepower and 74 pound-feet of twist more than the AMG GT R.

The Black Series also features a more aggressive and aerodynamic body, including a big rear wing and a modified front bumper. It also features more carbon-fiber components than any other AMG GT model. The Black Series rides on a bespoke suspension setup. The coupe hits 62 mph in just 3.2 seconds, while charging toward a top speed of 202 mph.
