• See How the BMW M135i Stacks Up Against the Mercedes-AMG A35 in a Drag Race

Here are two hot, similarly spec’d German hatches taking a swing at each other on the track

LISTEN 02:42

Mercedes-AMG and BMW have two very able hot hatches in their stables – the A35 4Matic and the M135i xDrive, respectively. The M135i xDrive has been on fire lately and is literally racking up victories in most of the races it’s been part of. But, the A35 is no slouch either.

So, what happens when you pit the two against each other in a drag race? The folks at Car Magazine South Africa decided to find out, and you will be quite surprised with the result.

BMW M135i vs. Mercedes-AMG A35 Drag Race Video

What Do The Specs Look Like?

The BMW M135i xDrive comes packed with a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder that makes 302 horses and 332 pound-feet of torque.

The maximum power output comes between 4,500 to 6,250 rpm, and the maximum torque between 1,750 to 5,000 rpm. Power is sent to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission that helps it sprint to 62 mph from a standstill in 4.7 seconds.

As for the Mercedes-AMG A35 4Matic, it is powered by a turbocharged, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder that churns out 302 horses as well, but just 295 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The A35 4Matic also takes 4.7 seconds to hit the 62 mph mark from a standstill on its way to a top speed of 155 mph before the electronic speed governor kicks in.

This Was Quite An Anti-Climax

The quarter-mile drag race saw a yellow A35 4Matic and a white M135i xDrive go up against each other. The minute-long video was expected to end with the BMW winning the race, but surprisingly, the A35 beat the Bimmer.

The Mercedes-AMG A35 took 13.42 seconds to cross the finish line, whereas the BMW M135i needed 13.56 seconds.

This seems a little confusing given that the BMW has the upper hand on paper and in reality. But, somehow, the lower-torque Merc-AMG managed to defeat the Bavarian. What are your thoughts on this race? Share them with us in the comments section below.
