When it comes to reimagining classic Porsche 911s, Singer Vehicle Design is the go-to place, especially for the US. The California-based company has been reimagining classic Porsches for over 12 years now. Its latest creation is a tribute to the original 911 Turbo – the 930 – and is a bit different than Singer's other projects, for more than one reason.

The First turbocharged Singer

It wouldn’t really be a proper tribute to the original Porsche 930 Turbo if it is normally aspirated. The talented craftsmen from Singer know that which is why they are giving us the first-ever turbocharged Singer. True to the original Turbo, the Singer Turbo's flat-six engine is still air-cooled. However, in the Singer Turbo, the engine displaces 3.8 liters and features six electric wastegates and water-to-air intercoolers.

This allows the Singer Turbo engine to produce 450 horsepower, but Singer can squeeze more power if the customer so chooses. The gearbox is a six-speed manual and grip has been entrusted to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, which are 245/35R18 in the front and 295/30R18 at the back. This means that the Singer Turbo can potentially become the most powerful Singer model, possibly dethroning the 500-horsepower Singer DLS. As for the weight, Robert Dickinson says the Singer Turbo should not weigh more than 2,800 pounds (1,270 kg).

In true Singer tradition, the Singer Turbo Study sits on a Porsche 964 chassis. The 911, made from 1989 to 1994 is a great all-around platform for a reimagined classic and neatly accommodates the bespoke, wide, fiberglass body. As standard, the Singer Turbo comes with a touring suspension, but a firmer sport suspension is optional. Unlike the original Porsche 911 Turbo, the Singer Turbo comes with ABS and traction control, as standard.

As classically correct as a Porsche 930 Turbo

The Singer Turbo Study perfectly recreates all of the 930 Turbo’s design cues. The shark fins and whale tail perfectly mimic those of a 930 Turbo. Even the three slats on the side of the front bumper have been brought back, and there’s a subtly integrated front splitter too.

Inside, the Singer Turbo’s interior is driver-oriented, but also luxurious. After all, the original 911 Turbo was advertised as a grand tourer. The Singer’s interior is dominated by the best-quality leather and wooden inserts can be found on the dashboard. The electrically-adjustable sports seats are also styled after the ones, found in the late 1970s Porsche 911 Turbo.

Availability

The Singer Turbo will, no doubt, be produced in limited numbers. That said, 70 customers have already put down deposits for Singer’s first turbocharged car. No prices have been announced yet, but it is almost certain that the Singer Turbo will start at over $500,000.

Final thoughts

The original Porsche 911 Turbo, produced between 1974 and 1989, is a true automotive icon. The “Widowmaker” spawned a lineage of insanely-capable sports cars, based on the Porsche 911. But as many say, the original is second to none, and what Singer has done with its first Turbo is it took us into an alternative reality, in which the 930 Turbo comes out in 2022.
