It's been just a few days since our paparazzi provided us with our first look of the next-gen BMW 7 Series' interior, and the German sedan->ke142 is now back on public streets with a bit less camouflage on its body. The 2016 7 Series has been a well-guarded secret throughout 2014, even though the prototype received numerous updates that took it closer to production form. The heavy camouflage it was wrapped in every time BMW->ke178 took it out for a spin prevented us from having a better look at its redesigned exterior. But it seems the sedan is finally ditching some of its swirly wrap as it prepares for its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015.

Most of the prototype is still under camo, but the revised design is more noticeable than ever. We finally get a glimpse of the front end, the lower rear apron is completely camo free, while the production taillights are in place at last. While the nose is still wrapped in swirly decals, the shape of the headlamps and the kidney grille are far more obvious when compared to the previous prototype. As expected, the kidney grille has grown in size, being wider than ever before. The headlamps are larger too, also sporting a new layout with revised graphics. Much like any updated Bimmers we've seen throughout 2014, the next 7 Series also has its headlamps connected to the kidney grille, giving it a more dynamic look. Down below, the front bumper appears to be similar to the current model's, but we expect that to change, as both the chrome trims and the fog lamps are missing.

On the sides, there's a pronounced character line running along the car's waistline and a brand-new vent on the front fenders. Around back, the redesigned rear fascia includes a reshaped trunk lid with a new chrome strip, reshaped LED taillights, and a reworked lower apron. The exhaust outlets are significantly larger and feature a new design.

Why it matters

With the next-gen full-size sedan set to become the lightest and most advanced 7 Series yet, it's hard not to get excited every time a prototype hits the streets. The camo is finally starting to come off the outer shell, a sign that the 7 Series will soon showcase most of its exterior design. We're still about 10 months away from seeing it in the metal at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, but the 2016 7 Series will strip even more over the next few months.
