Although Lexus->ke47 has yet to confirm plans to offer a high-performance version of the GS sedan, it appears the Japanese luxury->ke505 automaker is indeed working on a competitor for the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. And this time we're not quoting another rumor that surfaced the Interwebz, but relying on a batch of photos we just received from our trusty paparazzi. Yes, folks, the Lexus GS F is alive and rolling on tarmac, although for the time being only in the form of a prototype.

The vehicle you see above was just spotted roaming the streets, and the body panels hidden behind the camouflage suggest we're looking at a beefed-up version of the GS. The sports sedan is set to arrive for the 2016 model year, when it will join the brand-new RC F in Lexus' quest to take on BMW's popular high-performance sedans->ke142.

Spy Shots

We have to give credit to Lexus for doing its best in covering the essential bits of this test vehicle, but it's not fooling anyone. The aggressive front fascia has "F" written all over it, and the low-profile tires and big brakes are yet another indication that this isn't your regular GS.

What's more, the sedan is equipped with stacked, quad exhaust pipes, a configuration Lexus only uses on its high-performance models. Look closer and you'll also notice a diffuser between the exhaust outlets. It's all covered in swirly wrap, but the fins are there. What's more, the trunk lid comes with the kind of spoiler you only see on performance sedan or fancy special-edition models. And this is no special-edition four-door. No, it packs a lot of heat.

Speaking of heat, we expect the GS F to make use of the RC F's 5.0-liter, V-8 engine. Output is likely to sit in the 500-horsepower range, but no more than 550 ponies.

Why it matters

With the RC F set to give the M4 a run for its money in terms of performance and technology, we're more than eager to find out what Lexus has in store for the GS F. Sure, it won't be as sexy as its two-door brother, but if there's anything we learned about Lexus recently it's that it has the ability to turn a luxury sedan into a scorching-hot four-door.
