BMW has been testing the facelift X5 M for over a year now. Our spy photographers have caught prototypes of the future SUV many times before, including around the famous Nurburgring track. Now, BMW took the SUV out for some more testing around the ring, and for the first time we get to see the new undisguised grill, which is very similar to that of the upcoming BMW XM.

The 2024 BMW X5 M is Evolving?

While the previous prototypes had a heavily camouflaged front end, the one caught testing today reveals its new grille. It seems that BMW opted for a more angular shape and replaced the vertical slats with new horizontal ones. The M badge is still hiding under camouflage. The headlights seem to be slimmer, and the front bumper received a new design. The mesh of the current model is replaced by new vertical and horizontal bars, but these seem to be the only changes to the front end.

While the front end revealed its new grille, the rear end is still hiding under a lot of camouflage. The general shape remains the same, but we expect to see a revised bumper and a new diffuser, plus revised taillights. They will retain the current shape, but the clusters seem to have new internal graphics.

While we have no images of the interior just yet, we expect a few changes here too. BMW will offer new trims and upholstery, and we also expect to see the latest iDrive 8 infotainment system.

BMW XM's Engine in the X5 M

While the exterior and the interior of the future X5 M won't suffer too many changes, the biggest update will be under the hood. The current model is powered by a twin-turbo, 4.4-liter V-8 engine that delivers 600 horsepower in the base version and 617 horsepower in the Competition version. However, for the facelift X5 M, BMW will switch over from the current S63 engine to the new S68 V-8 engine. This is the same engine that will power the production version XM. But, while the XM will deliver around 750 horsepower, do not expect a similar output for the X5 M. BMW took this decision most likely because the S68 engine is also capable of supporting plug-in hybrid technology and BMW's future lineup is going to be electrified.

BMW X5 M On Sale Date

BMW will unveil the facelift X5 and X6 at the same time their respective M models sometime in early 2023. Sales should begin in time for the 2024 model year.
