Spy Shots: Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake Reveals All its Secrets
Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming CLA Shooting Brake has yet again been spotted by spy photographers, this time trotting down the German Autobahn. While this isn’t our first time seeing the car running about, these shots to reveal nearly every bodyline on the car’s rear flanks. Unfortunately, the Benz darted down an off-ramp before any more photos could be captured.
The CLA Shooting Brake, codenamed X117, has been in the works since the Mercedes pulled the covers off the CLA sedan for the 2014 model year. Rumor has it we can expect the upcoming CLA to debut at the 2015 Detroit Motor Show this coming January with sales starting a few months later in March. Sadly, the official word is still out on whether Mercedes will bring the CLA Shooting Brake to the States.
Customers around the world will enjoy the same powertrain options in the Shooting Brake as in the standard CLA, including the turbocharged four-cylinders and diesels. Speculation would also suggest Mercedes would transplant the CLA 45 AMG’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder powerplant into the Shooting Brake. With 355 horsepower and a 0-to-60-mph time of 4.4 seconds, we can only hope.
The lack of camo on this test mule shows Mercedes is very close to having a production-ready version. And with the rumored Detroit launch only a few months away, that is likely the case.

Why it matters
The CLA-Class has proven to be a great seller for Mercedes, offering a lower entry point for the prestigious brand. Yet another version coming to market, especially one with more interior volume, spells good news for the automaker. Hopefully Mercedes will bring the CLA Shooting Brake to the States, though it has a history of reserving these type vehicles for other parts of the world.
