The new Subaru BRZ has just reached dealers this fall with a starting price of $28,995, and yet the Japanese automaker is halting orders for its latest two-door sports car.

This doesn't necessarily mean that you can't outright purchase a brand-new BRZ, but if you're planning to spec one via the online configurator with your preferred color and interior trim choices, well, you're out of luck.

Subaru quietly halted orders of the BRZ beginning on January 13 according to this dealer memo that was shared at FT86Club. If you want a brand-new BRZ yourself, you can now only rely on dealer stocks and hopefully be able to find one that matches or at least nearly matches your desired specification.

Subaru's spokesperson Charles Ballard was able to reach out to CarBuzz and he said the following statement:

Subaru has been struggling over the past two years with its vehicle production, as the Japanese automaker continues to suffer from the ongoing chip shortage. From its usual level of 45 days of inventory, Subaru dealers are now dealing with just a five-day supply, as Automotive News reports. Further compounding the problems is the fact that the same news report says that in December 2021, Subaru had 45,000 unfulfilled orders, and an additional 10,000 are being added each month.

As a result of all these challenges, Subaru's annual vehicle sales in the United States have been declining for two years in a row. Its 2021 sales stood at 583,810 units, which represents a 4.6 percent decline from the past year.

It also must be noted that the Subaru BRZ is essentially the twin of the Toyota GR 86, and the two sports cars share the same production line in Japan. There's a high possibility that its Toyota twin is also affected by the supply chain disruptions, but nothing's been confirmed as of the moment.
