You can’t go wrong with these rides, but only one can claim to be the fastest

LISTEN 03:35

The luxury performance SUV market is a competitive segment with no shortage of impressive challengers. From the BMW X4 M to the Mercedes GLC 63 S to the Jaguar F-Pace SVR, you can have a pick of these three and go home with a big smile on your face.

But the eternal question that plagues every car applies here, too. Which is the best one among these three high-performance SUVs? More specifically, which of these three is the fastest in a drag race? OK, not everyone asks the latter question, but that doesn’t mean we’re not curious to find out, right? YouTube channel Cars with Pilot Tseno has the answer for us, and it is a surprise, to say the least.

What’s the tale of the tape?

In the blue corner, we have the BMW X4 M Competition. It’s powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged straight-six engine that produces 503 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. All that power transfers to all four wheels courtesy of a ZF-built eight-speed automatic transmission that’s been tweaked to engage in quick-action shifts, making it ideally suited in a race of this kind. The X4 M Competition also comes with launch control. This setup allows the X4 M Competition to burst off the line about as quickly as any SUV in its class. Bimmer even claims that the X4 M Competition can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds before maxing out at a top speed of 177 mph.

In the red corner, it’s the Mercedes GLC 63 S. It runs on a bigger 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine that churns out 506 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. The Merc’s torque number gives it an edge on the start line over the X4 M and the Jag F-Pace SVR. A nine-speed automatic transmission that’s also tuned for lightning fast shifts ends power to all four wheels, enabling the GLC 63 S to hit rapid acceleration bursts without delay. It shows, too, in the SUV’s acceleration time; the GLC 63 S can hit 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds, almost 0.5 seconds faster than the X4 M Competition. On the flip side, the Mercedes SUV peaks at a top speed of just 155 mph, well below the 177-mph top speed of the Bimmer.

Then there’s the Jaguar F-Pace SVR sitting in the green corner that we just made up. It’s powered by the biggest engine among the three SUVs: a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 unit that produces 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. Like its German rivals, all that power is sent to all four wheels of the SUV through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Unlike its German rivals, the F-Pace SVR does not come with launch control, something that it could use in a race of this setup. Still, the Jag can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds before maxing out with a top speed of 176 mph.

So, which of these three luxury performance SUVs ends up with bragging rights in this drag race? No spoilers here, folks. Best check the video to find out.

Kirby’s first exposure into the world of automobiles happened when he caught Knight Rider on television as a five-year old boy. David Hasselhoff didn’t leave much of an impression on him (that happened later on in Baywatch), but KITT certainly did. To this day, Kirby remains convinced that he will one day own a car with the same ‘spirit’ as the original KITT (not the 2008 monstrosity). He doesn't know when that will be, but until then, he’s committed to expressing his love for KITT, and all cars for that matter, here at TopSpeed.  Read More
