This video from the past deserves to get attention even today. It’s a drag race between two supercars and one superbike. The contenders were the Porsche 918 Spyder, the McLaren P1, and the Ducati 1199 Superleggera. The folks at Autocar pit these three against each other for a standing mile drag race. Believe it or not, the difference between the winner and the loser was 0.38 seconds. Mind-blowing, isn’t it?

That’s A Unique Mix Right There

A six-speed sequential manual gearbox drives the rear wheel, obviously. It tips the scales at just 152 kilos (335 pounds), which gives it a massive power-to-weight ratio of 1,315 horsepower per ton.

A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox powers the rear wheels here. It weighs 1,450 kilos (3,197 pounds), which gives it a power-to-weight ratio of 623 horsepower per ton.

You get a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission here as well, but it channels the power to all four wheels. It is heavier than the P1, tipping the scales at 1,634 kilos (3,602 pounds). This brings the power-to-weight ratio to 535 horsepower per ton.

This Is What A Bloody Close Race

They got together for just one race. The Porsche rocketed off the line leaving its rivals behind. But, the Ducati wasn’t one to back off, and within a few seconds, it managed to edge the Porsche. The P1 was lagging behind, but at around 120 mph, it went past its German counterpart.

But, the numbers really show how close the race was initially. The Porsche was the quickest to hit 60 mph from a standstill, taking just 2.95 seconds. The Ducati and the McLaren followed, taking 3.14- and 3.24 seconds, respectively. This was just as close even when they touched 100 mph. The Ducati and the Porsche took 5.69- and 5.70 seconds to touch the mark. The McLaren wasn’t too far behind, as it took 5.78 seconds to 100 mph.

Things, however, changed a little when they touched 150 mph. The Superleggera took just 10.15 seconds to hit this mark, making it over a second quicker than the McLaren P1 which took 11.18 seconds, and much quicker than the Porsche 918 which took 11.43 seconds. The Ducati kind of slowed down post this whereas the others still kept gaining speeds. But, that didn’t matter because it still won the standing mile race. The Ducati finished the distance in 25.44 seconds at 191.45 mph. The McLaren lost by the barest of margins, taking just 0.05 seconds more than Ducati to come second. It took 25.49 seconds at 204.7 mph. The Porsche didn’t do too bad either, staying in the sub-26-second mark, taking 25.82 seconds at 194.64 mph.
