Tesla Autopilot Will Recognize And Respond To Traffic Signals And Stop Signs

Tesla’s Autopilot is about to get smarter now. According to new reports, the brand’s semi-autonomous technology will halt at red signals and stop signs. The feature is still in beta phase, but will be added to Autopilot in the future.
A video demonstrating the feature was uploaded on Out of Spec Motoring’s YouTube channel wherein a Tesla Model 3 automatically stopped at the red light when the Autopilot was engaged. This was perhaps rolled out to a group of people because Tesla hasn’t officially announced anything about it.
How Does Tesla’s Stop Light Feature Work?
The video was uploaded on YouTube channel but it looks to have been taken down after. However, the video is uploaded on other outlets and you can see that the Model 3 detects all the traffic lights in its short run, but is a bit confused with the color of the lights.
It starts off with the driver stopped at the red signal, but the car doesn’t move even after the signal turns green. The driver had to tap the accelerator to get it moving. At the other signals, it had the tendency to stop even though the light was green and the driver had to tap the A-pedal to keep it from stopping.
A lot of release notes show Tesla referring to this feature as “Stopping at Traffic Lights and Stop Signs.”
A Tesla hacker who goes by the name green found a user’s manual for the feature buried in Firmware 2020.12.1 for the Model 3 and Model Y.
The manual also mentions that “the system uses forward-facing cameras, GPS, and map data to detect traffic lights and stop signs.”
For now, the system is stopping at the signals even if the light is green, but this could perhaps happen for safety reasons since the feature is still under development. If the driver thinks it is safe to continue, all he needs to do is tap the A-pedal or the gear lever to continue driving.
Tesla Is Building A Stronger Database With Real-World Examples
Apparently, the crossroads detection is being used for Machine Learning. As Motortrend reports, Tesla is looking to attain more real-world examples and that could be one of the reasons why it is asking the driver to make a move at the green lights.
This way, Tesla will receive more feedback as to how humans respond to them. This, in turn, will be used to train the Full-Self Driving’s neural net. If that’s the case, it could be a long time before the software rolls out for the masses.
This is a bigger problem than the highway lane-changing, so Tesla will look to absorb as much feedback and data as possible before rolling it out. This feature will be a great add-on to the partial self-driving capabilities of Autopilot and will make Tesla cars more practical urban commuters. What are your thoughts on this feature?
