First, there was the the iconic Lotus->ke49 submarine from the James Bond classic “The Spy Who Loved Me.” Then there was the "psychedelic cowbell road." If you thought that Tesla->ke1842 had run out of Easter eggs for its growing number of electric car->ke1030 models, you might have to reconsider that train of thought. Another entertaining Easter egg has surfaced and this one is as cool and as colorful as the rainbow road that can be accessed through the Autopilot function.

The new Easter egg can be found in the car’s electric port. In normal settings, the port emits a blue glow; we knew that already. What we didn’t know was that the port can be turned into a splash of colorful cars when the button on the charging cable is clicked 10 successive times. Do that and the port starts glowing in different colors, pulsating for a few second before returning back to its normal configuration. The new feature reportedly comes with the latest software update. Tesla has yet to confirm the existence of this Easter egg, but we’ve seen enough videos from Tesla Model S owners to see that it actually works.

Ultimately, the rainbow car port doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things. It’s not going to make the Model S->ke3329 run faster or improve its battery range. But like most Easter eggs, it’s a way for Tesla to connect to its customers with these little secrets that are fun to discover. Judging by the increasing frequency of these Easter eggs, don’t be surprised if there are others that have yet to be discovered. Gesture steering, perhaps?

Why it matters

You have to give it to Tesla. The electric car maker may have had its share of criticisms in the past, but you can’t deny that the company knows how to have fun and keep its customers on their toes. At the end of the day, these Easter eggs are being put into the Model S and Model X to get its owners to appreciate their models more, even if it’s something as silly as a “psychedelic rainbow road” or a colorful car port.

I don’t know if everybody appreciates these kind of surprises, but I’m of the belief that these things are actually important in cultivating a fun and cool brand image. If anything, that’s the big payoff with having Easter eggs. Tesla seems to have figured out the value of these unique features and how it can have a positive effect on its customers when used properly.

Other industries, specifically the film and TV industries, have long relied on Easter eggs to pique the curiosities of its viewers. Now it seems that Tesla is embracing that same thinking for its customers. Don’t be surprised if this becomes a thing in the industry in the future. Simple and harmless Easter eggs may not have the same kind of future as autonomous driving technology, but Tesla is showing that they have a place in the future of the business. Let’s hope that this trend continues because if for nothing else, they’re really fun to discover.
