Tesla’s ability to monetize just about anything under the sun is back in the news. As if flamethrowers, tequilas, and branded hats aren’t enough, the Tesla is now offering a “Plaid Mode” t-shirt to commemorate the arrival of the new range-topping version of the Model S. The shirt, which is literally available in Tesla’s online shop was designed to, according to the company, “celebrate Tesla’s incredible performance mode.” It’s made from 100% cotton, and, apparently, it’s also the “next best thing to riding shotgun at the Nurburgring.” The Tesla “Plaid Mode” t-shirt is available for $35 at sizes ranging from “XS” to “XXL.” At this point, if you haven’t bought one yet, we don’t know what you’re waiting for.

To understand what that means, you need to watch the 1987 movie Spaceballs starring Mel Brooks and directed by, well, Mel Brooks. The movie was a blatant parody of Star Wars and in one particular scene, Rick Moraines’ character, Dark Helmet, demands the crew of his ship to go engage Ludicrous Speed in an attempt to catch Lone Star (Bill Pullman) and his sidekick Barf (John Candy). Not only did Ludicrous Speed turn to be faster than Dark Helmet and his crew expected, but it was also so fast that it caused Barf to say, “They’ve gone Plaid!”

That, in a not-so-quick-nutshell, is where Tesla got the name for its new Model S performance mode. It also explains the graphic in Tesla’s “Plaid Mode” t-shirt. Funny how all of that worked out, right?

It’s a far more affordable option than actually buying the Tesla Model S Plaid, which Tesla said is arriving sometime in the latter part of 2020. If you can’t wait for that time to arrive, you can scoop up the Plaid Mode shirt and experience what Tesla describes as the “next best thing to riding shotgun at the Nürburgring,” a reference to the Model S Plaid’s supposed record-breaking lap times around the world’s most famous race track.
