The highly anticipated Tesla Model Y is scheduled to make its début this Thursday, March 14. But before Tesla pulls the covers off of the crossover, it’s going to have fun at everyone’s expense. Tesla is a troll among trolls, and it proved its worth yet again by hiding a secret message in the event invitation teaser for the Model Y. This isn’t the first time Tesla has dabbled into inserting random teaser eggs in the most obscure of locations, but this one hits a little close to home, especially to those like us who are always looking to see more than we should when it comes to shadowy teaser images. Well played, Tesla. Well played.
Tesla Model Y - Nice Try
Oh, Tesla. I don’t always agree with everything that you do, but I’ll give you this much: your skills at trolling the masses are unmatched in the industry.
The electric car maker that’s known more for its pioneering efforts in the electric car market is also a world-class troll. Whether it comes in the form of random easter eggs or actually useful hidden features, there’s no gimmick that’s too far out of reach for the company.
The latest example comes to us by way of Tesla’s PR department, which concealed a secret message in the invitation teaser for guests who will attend the launch of the Model Y, Tesla’s highly awaited crossover SUV.
So we tried to brighten up the picture through an image editor to see if there were any additional details we could uncover ahead of the Model Y’s grand unveiling. We didn’t find what we were looking for, but we did see a short — and really small — message between the Model Y’s two front wheels.
“NICE TRY.”
As frustrating as it was to see our efforts foiled by a two-word message, it’s hard not to appreciate Tesla’s playfulness. It obviously knew that people would try to look for hidden details in the teaser image because that’s what everyone does these days when it comes to teasers of this ilk. So Tesla shut it down the only way it knows how: the troll way.
It’s a solid jab that definitely caught our attention. We got a good giggle out of it, too, just as we did when we were told that the Model Y had another easter egg.
The good news is that there is a secret video that you can access by clicking the “todo” link. The bad news — is it even bad news at this point? — is that the video has nothing to do with Tesla or even the Model Y. Instead, “the secret video” is actually the prologue scene from the popular game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. If you’ve played this game, you’ll definitely recognize it the moment you see it. If not, well, it’s nothing that you should take seriously. It is a bit curious, though, that, of all the games that it could tap, Tesla chose The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Is it possible that Tesla sees some parallels between the Model Y’s sales trajectory with the game’s storyline? I don’t fancy the Model Y fighting against dragons and grumpkins anytime soon so I’ll chalk this easter egg up to one of those random gimmicks that Tesla is famous for.
After all, this is the same company that can fill up a book with all the easter eggs it has released over the years. Remember the “psychedelic cowbell road” inside the Autopilot system of the Tesla Model S? Lest we forget about the flashing rainbow carport and the quirky nod to the iconic Lotus submarine from the James Bond movie, The Spy Who Loved Me.
Easter eggs are a part of Tesla’s identity. It’s one of the most endearing qualities of the automaker and its CEO, Elon Musk. Hopefully, the fun doesn’t stop once the Model Y makes its début later this week. The “Nice Try” easter egg is a masterclass in troll jobs. I just wish it didn’t come at our expense.
