Harnessing electricity - fully or partially - in a vehicle has opened a whole lot of avenues for car brands to explore in their quest to offer more power than the rival next door.

One such nameplate is BMW's M division, which doesn't have the slightest intention to limit the level of grunt offered by its future models. On the contrary: it plans to boost those figures.

Make way, more powerful BMW M cars are coming

Australia's Which Car had a chat with mister Markus Flasch, head of BMW M and the official had some interesting things to reveal about the future of the M moniker.

One of them relates to the level of power future M cars will offer. PS: it's looking good for the gearhead community.

Mister Flasch believes that "success has to be better than the predecessor's character." What's more, he is confident that "an electrified car, whether it's plug in the wall, battery electric, has to take it up with the predecessor" and "we are going to make it happen." What's more, he is confident that "M is the exaggeration of what BMW stands for, in therms of driving pleasure. M supplements BMW and it's going to remain this way.

Sounds ambitious, right? Well, this creed, if we can call it that, is based on the belief that "smaller, crisper, rougher.""

But what does that exactly mean?

In addition, the M division is confident that it can harness the said extra power as well as come up with ways to control it, in order to make the M brand accessible to everyone.

In this regard, Markus Flasch thinks that power is nothing without control and that BMW M can deliver an M5 with 625 horsepower, for example, that can be driven by his mom, in winter. As a result, we shouldn't expect a power limit.

At the same time, the official agrees that the closest car to the M ethos is the M2, since it's "for the enthusiasts; for someone who wears a mechanical watch."

Lastly, concerning what sorts of transmissions we'll see on future BMW M cars, Mr. Flasch says the answer is mostly automatic gearboxes, with manuals coming second, as an option "for the enthusiasts; for someone who wears a mechanical watch."
