The automaker is planning to produce more of the extra-lengthy Continental

Lincoln brought back the nostalgia of the 1960s with its Continental Coach Door Edition last year. The automaker plans to produce just 80 examples of the suicide door edition Continental at a premium of $40,000 over the top-of-the-line Continental. Despite the exorbitant price tag, Lincoln sold all the 80 copies within three days of its launch! If you were planning to get one and think you have lost your chance, do not fret. Lincoln will soon be producing more of the Coach Door Editions as a 2020 model.

No One Expected Such a Rousing Response

Lincoln’s higher-ups are definitely smoking cigars in their cabins with feet on the tables seeing the success of the Lincoln Continental Coach Door Edition. The Lincoln Continental Coach Door Edition came with a price tag of $110,000, but that did not deter the customers.

Although the company claims that only 80 copies were made to commemorate the Continental’s 80th Anniversary, let’s be honest here for a second – Lincoln did not expect the Coach Edition to sell as it did.

That is precisely why the company did not even set any criteria to move the behemoth out of the assembly line. It was sold on first-come-first-basis. This is against the trend of limited-production run cars, which generally have a tedious selection process and cars are allotted to the lucky customers based on various factors. Even the Ford GT required buyers to fill out an intricate application form just to be considered for ownership

Nevertheless, according to The Detroit Free Press, Lincoln will bring back the 2019 Continental Coach Door Edition for a run again. Speaking with the Freep, Robert Parker, Director of Marketing at Lincoln, said, “Our first two calls came from New York and the West Coast, each wanted to be first. One customer was one of these people who could have whatever they wanted, and he wanted to match the Lincoln with his aircraft. One guy from Tulsa has become a pen pal. I even got a Christmas card from him this year. Over Thanksgiving, he was texting me because the rumors were heating up. I’ve never even met this person. I don’t know how he got in contact with me.”

Lincoln issued a statement saying, "Response from customers has been extremely positive, with interest exceeding the planned production for the limited-edition run."

The 80 approved customers will be notified about their allotment in February, and the first deliveries will take place in summer this year.

Lot Of Positive Takeaways For Lincoln

The launch of the Coach Doors did not just earn the automaker reputation and money, it also attracted a crowd of people under the age of 40; something very odd for Lincoln.

Lincoln is known to serve to the rich, wealthy, old people who need a car that exudes luxury, but costs south of the six-digit figure. The Lincoln Continental Coach Door Edition breached the mark slightly, but still sold immediately. Props to the person who came up with this idea because the company recorded its best monthly sales figures in the last 28 years!

With that said, it made sense for Lincoln to capitalize on the success of the Continental moniker. Despite the moving shift towards SUVs and crossovers, the Continental was warmly welcomed and reminded people of the true spirit of the Lincoln cars that were known for being the home-grown plush, posh vehicles. In what could have been a rather safer option, the American automaker did take a risk by not bringing the Coach Edition on one of its four SUVs; five, if you count the Aviator. But as they say, higher the risk, higher the returns.

Let’s Talk About The Car Itself

The 2019 Lincoln Continental Coach Door Edition is based on the top-trim Continental Black Label.

Thanks to the elongated wheelbase, the car has generous rear-seat space.

To accommodate the suicide doors, the car’s wheelbase was elongated by six inches. The back seat is the place to be in this uber luxurious car. Passengers can enjoy a fixed center console with hideaway tray tables, wireless charging pads, and tablet holders. To make the passengers feel all the more special, the first lot will have numbered sill plates. Do you think Lincoln will continue the next batch from ‘81’? Apart from this, the 2019 Lincoln Continental Coach Door Edition will feature Perfect Position seats that can be adjusted in 30 different ways. The rear passengers also get a second set of audio and climate controls. Oh, and did I forget to mention about the extra legroom?

This May Come As A Surprise To You

Even though we are motorheads who care more about what’s under the hood than what’s inside the car, we would like to sit in the backseat and enjoy being driven around.

The Continental is for you to be chauffeured in; not for driving yourself.

But being the greedy breed that we are, a slightly more powerful engine would have been a better choice. The 207-inch wheelbase car is powered by a 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 that produces 400 horses and 400 pound-feet of torque. This is the largest engine found in Continental’s line up. The extra wheelbase and weight slows down the car significantly, but it is no slouch nevertheless.

Apparently there is quite a demand from Dubai and Shanghai as well. So, to cater to the buy-it-if-you-like customers, Lincoln could produce a bigger batch compared to the first one. We expect a change in the selection process as well, now that the automaker knows that the Coach Doors Edition will move on its own without the company pushing sales.
