Aston Martin has finally revealed the Rapide E at the 2019 Shanghai auto show after teasing it for months. It’s the all-electric version of the four-door Rapide that comes with fast charging, over 200 miles range on a single charge, and performance to match (and even surpass) what the V12-powered Rapide can muster.

What the 2020 Aston Martin Rapide E Brings to the Table

Production of the 2020 Aston Martin Rapide E will be limited to just 155 examples for the entire world, so it’s more of an image booster for Aston than it is a real money making model. In other words, Aston Martin is simply making it just to show it can, and that it is somewhat committed to electrification, as is the trend in the automotive industry nowadays.

But, that’s still a ridiculously small production number, even for a low-volume manufacturer like Aston. So what are the people who want one but didn’t make the short list of people that can have one missing out on?

Well, powering it is a pair of rear-mounted electric motors that together make 601 horsepower and 700 pound-feet (950 Nm) of torque. It even has a limited-slip differential to help put its power down, specific suspension tuning, a different and mostly flat underbody, and special wheels shod in Pirelli P-Zero tires.

According to the manufacturer, the Rapide E is capable of sprinting from naught to sixty in under 4 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph or 255 km/h. Aston also mentions that it takes the all-electric Rapide just 1.5 seconds to accelerate from 50 to 70 mph (80 to 110 km/h) - that is a lot less than it took you to read this last phrase.

Aston Martin says the Rapide E should have a one-charge range of more than 200 miles (320 km), according to the new WLTP guidelines and its battery can be charged up from flat in just three hours thanks to a high-power charger that the car carries around with it. The charger can actually put current back into the battery at a rate equivalent to 310 miles per hour, considerably more than the 185 miles per hour achieved through a regular 50-kW fast charger.
