The Range Rover Evoque isn’t exactly a spring chicken and 2019 marks the introduction of the second-generation of Land Rovers entry-level people mover. Entry level is a weak word when it comes to the Evoque however and, despite the fact that this model looks a lot like the old at a glance, there’s a lot of new tech here. The Evoque just became Land Rovers first mild hybrid vehicle and a plug-in model is even on the way. New screens adorn the updated dashboard inside but what really stuck out to me was the new hybrid rear view mirror.
The Range Rover Evoque has a High-Def Mirror
JLR officially calls it the “ClearSight Rear View Mirror” but that’s without consequence. This bad boy serves as the jumping point between old-school mirrors and the futuristic screen-and-camera approach that we see on almost every concept these days. On any given day, this mirror operates just like the mirror in your 1992 Toyota Camry. You look at it, and you see what’s behind you. But, with the flick of a switch, that mirror turns into a high-def screen and the video from the camera out back is displayed instead. This is particularly useful when you have a rear end full of cargo or your dinosaur of a brother sitting in the rear.
Now that’s pretty cool, but it’s not something you can’t have if you try hard enough. Dig around online and you’ll find aftermarket kits that include a license plate camera and a screen that clips over your rear-view mirror. It’s nowhere near as cool as what Land Rover has in the new Evoque but it’ll get you buy until your can spring for a new SUV. What you can’t have, though, is the “Ground View” system. I won’t say that no other automaker has this, with certainty, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it. It’s very James Bond-ish in a way, but it’s more about parking. Since the Evoque has such a high bonnet, it’s actually kind of hard to see where the curb is when you’re parking. Well, turn on this system and a full view of what’s going on up front is displayed on one of those 10-inch HD displays in the dash. It’s pretty cool, if you ask me.
