Ford just unveiled the final output of the 2020 Shelby Mustang GT500. At 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque, the 2020 Shelby GT500 is the most powerful, street-legal Ford ever and its 6.2-liter V-8 is the most power- and torque-dense supercharged V-8 in the world. What does this mean for the market? Let's find out.

The Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 trumps all competitors but one

At 760 horsepower, the new Shelby GT500 is significantly more powerful than all of its direct competitors. Chevy's range-topping muscle car, the Camaro ZL1, is no match for Ford's brand-new engine. Although it also features a supercharged, 6.2-liter V-8, the ZL1 comes with "only" 650 horsepower on tap. That's a 110-horsepower deficit compared to the GT500. It's not all bad though, as the ZL1's 650-pound-feet rating is 25-pound-foot higher than the Shelby's. But overall, the GT500 is the more potent coupe.

The other traditional rival available on the market, the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, was just updated with a bit more power for the 2019 model year. The supercharged V-8's output was increased to 717 horsepower and 656 pound-feet of torque, more than the Camaro ZL1's. But that's well below the GT500's 760-horsepower rating, with the Hellcat falling behind by a notable 43 horsepower. Just like the ZL1, the Hellcat has a bit more torque -- an extra 31 pound-feet to be exact -- but it's the less powerful car overall.

However, there is one muscle car that packs more oomph than the GT500. While the insane Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is not road-legal and can't be included in this comparison, the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye isn't restricted to the drag strip. Essentially a Hellcat with Demon upgrades, including the engine, the Redeye hits the streets with a whopping 797 horsepower and 707 pound-feet of torque on tap. That's 37 horsepower and 82 pound-feet more than the Shelby GT500, but the Shelby GT500 remains a valid market leader due to the Redeye's limited-edition status.

The Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 is more powerful than the Chevy Corvette ZR1

Impressively enough, the new Shelby GT500 packs more oomph than the mighty Corvette ZR1. Granted, the Chevy comes with 755 horsepower on tap, which means that the GT500 benefits from an extra five horses only, but figures are figures. On the other hand, the ZR1 benefits from significantly more torque. Rated at 715 pound-feet, the ZR1's supercharged V-8 engine delivers 90 pound-feet more than the GT500's mill.

The Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 packs more oomph than high-class supercars

If you fancy Ferrari-like power but you can't afford one, you're in luck; the Shelby GT500 delivers more than the Ferrari F8 Tributo. Powered by a twin-turbo, 3.9-liter V-8, the F8 Tribute comes with 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque on tap. That's 50 horses and 57 pound-feet below the American coupe. The same applies if we compare the GT500 to the cool McLaren 720S. The British supercar has the exact same output, but it's coming from a 4.0-liter V-8 engine. Sure, the Shelby GT500 isn't as quick as the F8 Tribute or the 720S, which hit 60 mph in less than three seconds, but if it's oomph you're interested in, the beefed-up Mustang delivers. And it will be significantly more affordable than these exclusive supercars.
