The highly anticipated new-generation Shelby GT500 will break cover on January 14, 2019. The news comes straight from Ford, which displayed a 1967 GT500 in a container at the Los Angeles Auto Show with "01.14.19" written on it.

More than 650 Horsepower

The container, which looks like the box of a scale model car, also contains some hints about the upcoming coupe, including the fact that it will be "the most powerful street-legal production Ford ever built." This means that it will generate more than the Ford GT's 3.5-liter V-6, which rated at 647 horsepower.

Ford has yet to release an official output rating, but the display says it will have "over 650 horsepower." That's a slight decrease from the rumored 700-horsepower rating, but it is indeed the most oomph coming from a vehicle built by Ford. Of course, the aftermarket versions of the Mustang made by Shelby don't count here.

Teaser Confirms Supercharged V-8

Ford also dropped a teaser on Facebook, the form of photo that shows the car's engine and the caption "we have 500 reasons why you should love the GT500. Here's the first one." The picture confirms the launch date once again and, more importantly, it confirms that the GT500 will feature a supercharged V-8 engine. This is an important bit of information, as previous rumors claimed the GT500 could have a twin-turbo V-8 instead.

However, most high-profile vehicles break cover early via leaked photos, so we could see the upcoming GT500 before the event. Stay tuned for more info and check out our speculative review on the muscle car.
