The 2020 Tesla Model Y is the California automaker’s latest compact all-electric crossover. We’re still waiting for all the details, but first impressions have us thinking that the Y could become the automaker’s best-selling model to date.

So far, we’ve only seen a few teaser images, but it appears as though the Y will bear the traditional Tesla design language already seen with the Model S, Model X, and Model 3. The Y will also be less expensive and smaller than the full-size X SUV, but will still offer that practical high-rider body style that consumers love.

Underneath the skin, the Y is based on the current Model 3 sedan, sharing some three-quarters of its components, including the interior, autonomous technology, and powertrain. However, the Y will be 10 percent bigger than the 3, cost about 10 percent more, and offer a bit less range than the entry-level four-door (probably around 200 miles for the base-model Y and 290 miles for the range-topper).

These days, Tesla seems to be in a constant battle, be it with the SEC, or stock short-sellers, or production delays, or just about anyone else in the industry who wants to see all-electric cars and autonomous technology fail. Regardless, we expect the Y to be yet another smash-hit for the California-based brand. It combines everything consumers want - a compact crossover body style, a high-range all-electric powertrain, cutting-edge technology, and sleek styling, not to mention the ever-desirable Tesla brand recognition.
