Volkswagen will put the ID all-electric hatchback into production in 2019, but we still have to wait until the vehicle is officially revealed. We expect it to have a more restrained and toned down design compared to the concept that previewed it, but at the same time, it will retain its overall shape and several design details.

We can already see that the production version will be quite a bit different to the ID Hatchback concept if we take a closer look at the camouflaged prototypes VW showed in this video. The vehicle looks to be more or less the same overall shape, but with far more conventional headlights and actual side rear-view mirrors - it looks like VW has not equipped the ID with cameras instead of mirrors, even though cars with such systems are already on the way.

VW doesn’t mention too much about the ID in the video, but we can tell you it will be powered by a rear-mounted electric motor with 170 metric horsepower, so it will be a rear-wheel drive vehicle.

Although the vehicle will be similar in size to a regular VW Golf, it will actually have nothing in common with that model. Instead, it will be the first vehicle made by the German giant underpinned by the new MEB modular architecture, which is specifically designed for EVs - hence the possibility to mount the motor in the back.

The production version of the VW ID Hatchback concept will debut at a major motor show in 2019 and go on sale towards the end of the year - deliveries will probably begin in early 2020.
