BMW is said to be working on a go-fast sedan that would slot above the M5 Competition. An exact debut date is hard to pinpoint at this stage, but BMW could make a move and unveil the so-called M5 CS by the end of 2020.

Anyway, details remain scarce for the time being, however, a recent report by BMW Blog reveals some interesting traits of the incoming M5 CS.

641 horsepower, less fat on the hips

M Performance will surely look to tweak the powerplant (to what extent we don’t know yet) and it could produce as much as 641 horsepower (650 PS).

If that’s the case, we’re looking at a 24-horsepower (25 PS) bump from what the M5 Competition is making (617 horsepower/625 PS). Torque is, too, expected to take a hike, to north of the current 750 Newton-meters (553 pound-feet), but not above 800 Newton-meters (590 pound-feet), according to the same source.

If we look back at BMW’s other CS-branded cars, then a CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) roof could also be on the table, as well as a new carbon fiber trunk lid spoiler.

Naturally, the bump in oomph will dictate some mechanical tweaks aimed particularly at the braking setup - think ceramic/composite brakes with perforated rotors - seconded by a limited slip differential rework.

Final Word

Subsequently, this sort of fine tuning will ultimately reflect in the M5 CS’ price tag. At the time of writing, $102,700 got you the M5 in the U.S. and given that the M5 Competition demands $110,000, a CS-badged M5 might require at least $120,000, if not more. That’s as much a you’d pay for a 911 Carrera 4S or a 911 Targa 4, just to put things into perspective.
