The 2021 Ford Bronco’s tube doors are safer than the Wrangler’s

Ford recently unveiled the highly-anticipated 2021 Bronco, but we still don’t know much about its accessories. A recent leak confirms that the SUV will be available with tube doors, but unlike the Wrangler, the Bronco will also feature airbags for increased safety.

How do we know?

The folks over at the Bronco6G forum, who previously found images of the SUV on Ford’s website before it was unveiled, have also unearthed a photo that shows the Bronco’s tube doors. Unfortunately, the image shows the tube doors laid directly over the regular doors, but it’s solid confirmation that Ford will offer them as accessories in the future.

This photo also confirms previous rumors that the Bronco will have tube doors, which were based on patent images leaked long before the new SUV was unveiled.

What exactly are tube doors?

Tube doors were created specifically for off-road enthusiasts that may want to drive a doorless vehicle on public roads too. You see, while you may remove a vehicle’s doors on a remote off-road path, you have to put them back when you return to public roads. That mostly because driving without doors is not safe. Tube doors come in as the best compromise. While they help retain an open-door design, they also keep you in the vehicle. They also take more abuse, and you don’t have to worry about scratches and dents. They also look cool.

Why are the Bronco’s tube doors safer than the Wrangler’s?

Unlike the tube doors you get on the Jeep Wrangler, Ford's alternative also comes with an "inflatable safety device."

That’s Ford’s way of saying that the tube doors feature airbags. We know that from the leaked patent images that show an airbag mounted on the upper section of the tube door. In the event of a crash, these will inflate inside the cabin and prevent you from hitting the metal tubes. Granted, you’ll probably be much safer if you use the regular doors, but tube doors with airbags is better than nothing.

Well, the presence of an airbag is the obvious answer here, but there’s another thing to consider. To get tube doors on the Wrangler, you either have to go to Mopar or to one of the many aftermarket companies. When it comes to the Bronco, though, it will be a factory option, so there’s no need to contact a third-party company or browse through countless reviews to find the best option.
