Since it's revival as a Mercedes-Benz sub-brand in 2015, Maybach has been selling pimped-up S-Class model. Come 2020 and Mercedes-Maybach is switching to the latest-generation S-Class, the W223. Adopting the new design and features of the brand-new S-Class, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class takes things to a whole new level in terms of luxury and comfort. Seven inches longer than the regular S-Class, the Mercedes-Maybach model basically redefined chauffeured-driven luxury and offers an alternative to Rolls-Royce and Bentley limousines.

The Maybach-Mercedes S-Class is a fancied-up Merc with a longer wheelbase

Between 1997 and 2013, Maybach sedans were still based on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but they came with unique styling. Now that the brand exists as a Mercedes-Benz sub-brand, Maybach cars are basically S-Class sedan with mild changes on the outside. In the case of the new Maybach S-Class, this means C-pillars with Maybach logos and an optional two-tone paint with a dividing line. But the most important bit is the longer wheelbase, which features an extra 7.3 inches compared to the S-Class. That's actually compared to the S-Class Long, because the Maybach model features an 11.4-inch longer wheelbase when compared to the standard-length S-Class.

As a result, the rear doors are also longer, making ingress and egress easier. The Maybach model can also be ordered with unique rims available in a variety of designs and sizes. Although none of these changes are dramatic, they do help set the Maybach model apart. The two-tone finish is a particularly cool option, given that this limousine competes against Rolls-Royce models.

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class redefined full-size sedan luxury

The Maybach model is obviously an S-Class inside the cabin, but the German company enhanced both comfort and luxury, taking the full-size sedan to a new level. The extra seven inches from the wheelbase go straight into the rear compartment, so legroom is even more generous in this four-door.

Design features and tech are pretty much the same as in a well-equipped S-Class, so the Maybach comes with five display screens as standard. It also includes the 12.8-inch OLED central display as a high-tech control center and a 12.3-inch 3D driver display with a three-dimensional representation of other cars on the road.

The latter features a unique display for the Exclusive model, in which the surrounds of the dial instruments are in Rose Gold. This color is also used, together with Amethyst Glow, for the active ambient lighting. The Maybach model is also fitted with adaptive rear lighting, a first for Mercedes-Benz. This feature enables rear-seat occupants to adjust the brightness, the size, and position of the light spot, with a wide adjustment range between working light and relaxing lounge light.

You'll also find new features that expand the luxury appeal of the S-Class, starting with the large areas of trim on the front seats. There's also high-quality wood surrounds for the rear of the front seat backrests, with similar trim available for the area between the two rear seats. Comfort is obviously not an issue when you're being chauffeured in the Maybach S-Class. You can adjust the seat surface and backrest of the standard Executive seat independently, and you can also use the footrest on the front seat to electrically extend a legrest for a comfortable reclining surface. The adjustment travel of the leg rest has been extended by two inches compared to the old model. New features include massage functions for the calf rest and heating for the neck and shoulder areas.

The Maybach S-Class' cabin is also quieter than before thanks to the additional absorbent foam in the rear wheel arches, quarter windows with thicker laminated glass, and noise-optimized tires with foam absorbers. The latter are optional. Finally, you can also enter the rear compartment without having to touch the doors, thanks to the optional electrically operated system.

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class will be offered with three engines

Mercedes didn't go into detail about the engine options available for the Maybach S-Class, but it seems the sedan will be offered with three powertrains. One of them will be the S 580 4Matic model, which features a 4.0-liter V-8 turbo and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The gas engine packs 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, while the 48-volt system will add an extra 20 horses and 133 pound-feet.

While the regular S-Class is no longer available with a V-12 engine, the Maybach will have one in S 650 4Matic trim. The twin-turbo, 6.0-liter V-12 will deliver 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of twist, and it will also include the 48-volt system. The V-12 Maybach will also benefit from an all-wheel-drive system.

Finally, it seems that certain markets will also get a hybrid version of the Maybach S-Class. This model will be powered by the same gas-electric unit as in the S-Class S 580 e. It pairs a turbocharged, 3.0-liter inline-six engine good for 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of twist and an electric motor rated at 148 horses and 325 pound-feet. Combined output exceeds 500 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque.

How much will the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class cost?

Mercedes has yet to release pricing information, but expect the Maybach sedan to cost a bit more than the outgoing model. The base V-8 version will most likely fetch close to $180,000 before options, while the V-12 model will retail from around $210,000.
