Ford has raised the bar with the new Expedition. What could’ve been a simple facelift for the 2022 model is actually a whole lot more. Apart from the regular cosmetic changes, the Ford has also introduced a new off-road, rugged trim called the Timberline. Ford had introduced the Timberline trim on the Explorer also earlier this year. But that’s not it. A Stealth Edition is also now available, which, as the name infers, comes with blacked-out trims inside and out. The new additions further expand the Expedition’s lineup and now takes on the likes of the Jeep Wagoneer and the Chevy Tahoe even more aggressively.

What’s New On The 2022 Expedition?

Ford is going on the offense this time and it is clear from the way its release was worded. The company didn’t shy from comparing it with the Jeep Wagoneer and the Chevy Tahoe. Starting with the aesthetic changes first, the Expedition comes with new LED headlights, new taillights, and new wheel choices. The top Platinum trim comes with fog lamps with chrome accents and a new twin-spar mesh grille.

On the inside, there are quite a few tech upgrades. The SUV now comes with a 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. A 12-inch touchscreen system is offered as standard, but a larger portrait-oriented 15.5-inch touchscreen is also available. They are powered by the SYNC4 and the SYNC4A systems, respectively. Apart from this, the Expedition can also be had with a 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen Unleashed sound system, 360-degree surround camera, rear-seat entertainment system with Amazon Fire TV, and so on. The top Platinum trim also debuts the Ford BlueCruise hands-free highway Driver-Assist technology.

All the trims are powered by the same 3.5-liter, twin-turbo V-6 EcoBoost engine, but in different configurations.

What’s Special About The Expedition Timberline?

Described as the most off-road-capable Expedition ever, the Timberline trim is more than just a namesake off-road package. It rides on 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler AT tires wrapped around 18-inch wheels. It comes with a ground clearance of 10.6 inches; 0.6 more than the Jeep Wagoneer. This also improves the approach angle to 28.5 degrees and the departure angle to 23.7 degrees. Ford has even equipped the F-150 Raptor’s underbody protection here.

It also comes with a two-speed transfer case and Trail Turn Assist that we first saw on the Bronco. This will allow the full-size SUV to take sharper turns. To differentiate it from the other trims, Ford has installed a unique grille and slapped on some Active Orange exterior accents.

What’s Special About The Expedition Stealth Edition?

The Stealth Edition Performance Package can be had on the Expedition Limited and Limited MAX trims. It offers gloss black treatment on the grille, mirror caps, roof rails, running boards, tailgate, rear bumper skid plate, fog lamp bezels, and headlamp and taillamp housing. It rides on 22-inch premium black aluminum wheels with red calipers peeping from behind. ‘Expedition’ and ‘Limited’ badges are also blacked out, and so is the Ford logo.

It makes the same power as the Timberline trim - 440 horses and 510 pound-feet of twist – and comes with a retuned suspension setup.
