Honda has teased the new Civic Type-R in a couple of camouflaged photos and announced that the hot hatch is coming in 2022. Nothing else was revealed, but the images seem to give us a good idea of what the new Civic Type-R would look like.

Decoding And Deciphering The New Civic Type-R

Wrapped in a camo that has hundreds of little Civics on it, there is enough stuff in the images that we can delve into. From what it’s worth, it has been spied in the past, so it isn’t exactly the first time we’re seeing it. But, it’s always good to get official teasers, too. Anyway, coming back to the car, it is based on the four-door hatchback body style. The car looks bold and sharp, courtesy of the aggressive elements all around. The honeycomb mesh detailing can be seen in the grille and the air dam. The sleek headlights feature LED daytime running lights.

There’s a huge wing mounted at the rear along with three exhaust tips at the bottom. It reminded me of the Lexus LFA’s tri-tip exhaust setup. To think of it, the setup on the LFA looks like the iPhone 13 Pro Max, doesn’t it?

I digress.

The Type-R prototype rides on hot 10-spoke black wheels – 20-inches, most probably – shod in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. The red funky camo gels well with the red Brembo calipers.

There’s no other information provided, but it will feature the same 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine in all likelihood. In the current iteration, it puts out 306 horses at 6,500 rpm and 295 pound-feet of torque between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. You can expect the 2022 Civic Type-R to make a little more power than this.

It will be offered with a six-speed manual gearbox as confirmed by Honda already, and there could be a dual-clutch automatic as well. A limited-slip differential and rev-matching will be offered as standard. A stiffer chassis to improve the ride and handling is also a given.

The new Honda Civic Type-R will debut in 2022 and it could come with a slight hike. The 2021 Civic Type-R starts at $37,895 and the Limited Edition starts at $43,995. The new Type-R could start at a shade under $40,000.
