Just like pretty much all the other BMW models, the 1 Series is also about to receive an update. In the past few months the regular, less powerful versions have been caught testing a few times, but today, our spy photographers spotted a very interesting-looking M135i.

Of course, its camouflage is hiding the usual exterior updates, but the big surprise comes when you look at the rear of the car.

The current BMW M135i is offered with dual exhaust outlets, but this prototype is expected with a big surprise, or... should we say four of them? The prototype caught testing today features quad exhaust pipes like we also have seen on the next-generation BMW X1 M35i version.

Unless, you know, this is not the facelift M135i, and we are, in fact, looking at the long-rumored M140i - a model that will aim against cars like Mercedes AMG A45 and the Audi RS3. But, is BMW really going to put close to 400 horsepower under the hood of a 1 Series?

The prototype wears lots of camouflage, but you can still spot the new design of the headlights. They seem to be getting a new shape with a rounded and more slim design. The grille will also probably be redesigned, but do not expect it to be the size we've seen in cars like the 2 Series Active Tourer. The front bumper will also be redesigned, and will look more aggressive in trims like the M135i. At the back, the taillights will also feature new graphics, and the bumper will be redesigned, too, in order to accommodate the new quad pipes.

Also, this particular 1 Series sits closer to the ground and features bigger brakes.

On the interior, you should expect a bigger screen and the latest iDrive8 technology. The traditional gear shifter will also make way for that little toggle switch style gear selector.

Expect to see the facelift 1 Series launched before the end of 2022.
