At the same time with the launch of the third generation X1, BMW also launched the iX1 - the first all-wheel-drive electric car introduced by the brand in the premium compact segment. For now, it seems that the iX1 will only be offered in Europe, as the U.S. will only get the X1 xDrive28i - a model priced from $38,600.

The new BMW iX1 has the same dimensions as the X1. It measures 177.2 inches in length, 72.6 inches in width, and 64.6 inches in height. However, there will be a few elements that will distinguish the iX1 from its combustion-powered variants. There is of course no exhaust system, but the iX1 also gets blue accents around the kidney grille and on the side skirts and blue trimmings on the rear bumper. Everything else seems to be identical to the standard X1. It gets the same large, almost square BMW kidney grille, LED headlights with cornering lights, and full LED taillights in an L shape.

All models, including the iX1, will be offered with the cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system. In the iX1 as soon as the driver enters the destination, a charging-optimized route will be calculated, that of course, if the vehicle’s current range is not enough to reach the destination.

The biggest difference is, of course, under the hood. The iX1 is powered by a pair of electric motors - placed on the front and the rear axle. They deliver a combined 313 horsepower and 364 pound-feet of torque. It goes from 0 to 62 mph in just 5.7 seconds and up to a top speed of 112 mph. The two electric motors - front and rear create an electric all-wheel-drive system that ensures supreme traction and directional stability in all situations. Just like with all the other X1 M models, the iX1 is offered with adaptive M suspension.

The electric motors will get their juice from a 64.7kWh high-voltage battery positioned flat within the vehicle’s underbody. The battery supports DC fast charging at up to 130 kW, which means you can boost the battery level from 10 to 80 percent in 29 minutes or increase the range by 75 miles in just 10 minutes. The iX1 also comes with a Combined Charging Unit that enables single- and three-phase AC charging at a rate of 11 to 22 kW. The iX1 has a combined power consumption of 18.4 – 17.3kWh per 100km, which means it offers a driving range between 413 and 438 kilometers (257 – 272 miles).

iX1's customers will gain access to the IONITY charging network across Europe and the monthly fee waived for the first 12 months. All units will be offered with a BMW Charging Card, a charging cable (mode 3), and the Flexible Fast Charger.
