Until now, the next generation Mercedes-AMG GT has only been caught testing out in the cold weather of Scandinavia. But today, our spy photographers have caught a prototype testing at AMG’s Nürburgring technical center. This means that the next step will, of course, be the famous ring.
The prototype is still wearing lots of camouflage so it is still difficult to make an idea of what the next AMG GT will look like. But, what we do know is that it sure seems like a modern evolution of the current model, with some design elements inspired by the recently launched SL.
What we know so far about the next AMG GT is that it will be built on the same platform as the SL and will aim against cars like the Porsche 911 Turbo. Also, this time it will only be offered as a coupe, since the Roadster has been replaced by the SL.
Being built on the same platform as the SL means the next sports car will be offered with the same engine lineup. The base version - the AMG GT 53 - will be powered by a 4.0 liter twin-turbo V-8 engine that will deliver 469 horses and 516 pound-feet of torque, while the more powerful version - the AMG GT 63 will be powered by the same engine, but with the output increased to 577 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Rumors suggest that in the future, Mercedes will also offer a six-cylinder option and, of course, a more powerful Black Series version.
The new generation Mercedes AMG GT is expected to debut by the end of 2022 or in early 2023.
