A first Smart #1 prototype was caught testing back in March 2022, but it was heavily camouflaged and that made it difficult to get an idea of what the actual car will look like. Now, a new prototype is out for a new testing session, and this time, it changes the camouflage and makes it easier for us to observe a few more details.

Smart #1 will be the production version of the Concept #1. The automaker unveiled it at the 2021 IAA Munich Auto Show. Smart already confirmed the car weeks ago with a series of official spy shots, but so far, these new spy shots are the most revealing ones.

The car will be Smart's first battery-electric subcompact crossover SUV built by the new Smart Automobile - a company that now is a 50:50 joint venture between Daimler and Geely. The model will be built on the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) electric vehicle platform developed by Geely, and, if the spy shots are right, it will be as big as the Mini Countryman.

The crossover will take a step away from the usual Smart design and will adopt a more stylish SUV look, with a profile that looks similar to the Mercedes-Benz GLB. The new prototype reveals that the #1 will feature pop-out door handles and side mirrors attached to the front doors. We also know the model will be equipped with Active Grille Shutter (AGS) and narrow headlights.

This time our spy photographers were also able to take some shots of the interior and we can spot the seats wrapped in black-white leather, contrasting red seat belts, and a tablet-style infotainment screen. The same red color is used for the brake calipers and the side mirrors.

When it comes to the powertrain, Smart announced the model will be offered with a robust ESP system supported by Bosch and an all-electric powertrain. Rumors, however, suggest it will be offered with two battery options. The most powerful one will be a 60 kWh battery pack that will offer a range of about 270 miles.

The new Smart #1 will officially debut on April 7, 2022, with the first deliveries expected in December 2022.
