The first-generation Mercedes AMG GT was unveiled at the 2014 Paris Motor Show and after eight very successful years, Mercedes is preparing to launch the second generation. Prototypes of the next-gen GT have been caught testing many times before, and with the official launch getting closer we're now learning some pretty wild details.

We already know that the next AMG GT will only be offered as a coupe, with the new SL serving as the dedicated AMG roadster of the lineup. And while the exterior design will be heavily redesigned and re-engineered to take on cars like the Porsche 911, it's what's happening under the hood that really matters.

AMG GT: Taking on Ferrari and Lamborghini

At launch, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT will be offered with the same engine as its SL sibling: a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine offered in two states of tune - one with 469 horsepower in the GT 53 and one with 577 horsepower in the GT 63. Later on, Mercedes will also add the GT R, GT GT3, and range-topping GT Black Series to the lineup. However, the most intriguing model will be the new GT 63 S E-Performance. It will be offered with the same plug-in hybrid powertain as the GT 63 S E-Performance: a V-8 engine up front and an electric motor mounted on the rear axle. This system will deliver a total of 831 horsepower and 1,084 pound-feet of torque - numbers that will make the AMG GT the most powerful hybrid coupe on sale. Just to compare things, the Ferrari 296 GTB delivers 819 horsepower and the Lamborghini Sian produces 808 horsepower. The GT 63 S E-Performance will also be equipped with a 6.1-kWh battery that will provide an all-electric range of 7.5 miles.

Just like with the SL, the AMG GT will also be offered with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine combined with a 48V mild-hybrid system and electric turbocharger. This system will deliver a total of 375 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. All versions will be offered with a nine-speed Speedshift gearbox with a wet clutch that will replace the current Magna seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle.

How will the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT look?

Just like with the SL, the new AMG GT has been designed and engineered by AMG with input from other Mercedes-Benz divisions. This means that the coupe will look a lot like the SL, but with a roof, of course. Its exterior design will be an evolution of the current one, but it will keep the familiar elements of the AMG GT, like the large liftback-style tailgate.

From the SL, it will borrow the 4.4-pound carbon-fiber front underbody spoiler. It extends downward by about 1.6 inches and alters the airflow beneath the vehicle, resulting in the Venturi effect. It helps reduce front-axle lift by around 110 pounds at 155 mph. In the back, it will get a wing that deploys and tilts in five different stages. At speeds above 500 mph, it maximizes stability and reduces drag.

When will the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT arrive?

The new generation Mercedes-AMG GT should be unveiled sometime before the end of 2022 or in early 2023, with sales to begin shortly after. The E-Performance version will be unveiled a few months later.
