Many of you may remember when, in 2018, Alfa Romeo teased images of an 8C successor in the form of a mid-engined hybrid supercar along with a teaser shot of a hybrid GTV coupe. Neither vehicle came to fruition due to the brand's lack of traction with their volume Giulia and Stelvio models which resulted in FCA at the time to ax the halo sports car models. Though with new leadership and a bright vision for the brand's future, Alfa Romeo's stillborn 8C hybrid just may see the light of day as soon as next year.

What was the Alfa Romeo 8C Hybrid?

So what exactly was this 8C hybrid that Alfa Romeo was supposed to build? Well it was very distant from the original 8C Competizione went out of production back in 2010 as a front-engined, V-8 coupe. This modern interpretation was set to be a radical departure, moving the engine to the rear, and featuring a carbon fiber monocoque chassis.

The supercar was said to be powered by a twin turbo engine paired to a hybrid system where the combustion unit would provide power to the rear wheels while electric motors would power the front, creating an electric all wheel drive system. There even were estimated performance figures for this new 8C, with a projected 700 horsepower and zero to 60 mph under three seconds. Though as four years have passed, the project never saw the light of day.

What Alfa Romeo Supercar will we see in 2023?

A lot has changed in those four years, though, as Alfa Romeo, as well as the former FCA brand, is now Stellantis. New CEO of Alfa Romeo, Jean-Philippe Imparato, has strong aspirations for the future of the iconic Italian brand with various new products aimed at increasing sales, pushing towards electrification, and securing funding to build incredible sports cars.

What was unexpected was how soon we would see a new sports car from Alfa Romeo, and that time frame has jumped to just next year in 2023. What Imparato has said so far is that next year, Alfa Romeo will show a ‘a very exciting, very selective, very expensive’ sports car. The new car will simply be a design study aimed at production before 2025.

Though what could it be? Well Imparato has expressed his interest in building revivals of the 33 Stradale and Dueto, so we can look there for possible inspiration. This sports car also will serve as a special send off to the brands recent claim to fame, their TwinTurbo V-6 found in the Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio. And with reports of this new project being inspired by Alfa's F1 team, that would fall perfectly in line with a twin-turbo hybrid V-6 setup.

The brand has all the tools at hand as well from Sauber engineering in conjunction with their F1 team and know how from Maserati who just launched their MC20 with a mid mounted V-6 within a carbon chassis. Thankfully you won't have to wait that long as 2023 is just around the corner. For now, enjoy the Giulia, Stelvio, and soon to be launched Tonale small SUV.
