A new report is suggesting that AMG has not only closed the order books for the AMG GT Coupe and GT Roadster but will also end production by the end of 2021. This move, has been somewhat expected since the AMG GT Black Series has officially launched and usually, the Black Series name is synonymous with the end of a product’s lifecycle. So, what does this mean for the future of AMG coupes, and what will happen next? We think have some answers.

Goodbye AMG GT Coupe and Roadster, Hello Mercedes SL

It was back in April that we learned the new SL would be a full-on AMG project, just like the AMG GT. However, at the time, it was said the GT Roadster would be retired to make room for the AMG SL Roadster. The GT Coupe and GT 4-Door were supposed to be facelifted and instilled with a combination of the P3 hybrid system and AMG’s 4.0-liter V-8. Now, however, Motor.es is reporting that the GT Coupe and Roadster are canceled, with Mercedes only running production until December to cover a backlog of orders.

This news means that the AMG SL is about ready to launch, which isn’t all that surprising. Following spy shots from the Nürburgring in May and another set of spy shots in June, Mercedes even released a shot of the SL’s interior – it looked like it was inspired by Jar Jar Binks. We could see the new SL by the end of October or, at the very least, sometime before the end of November 2021, so it will launch as a 2022 model.

What About A Successor to the AMG GT Coupe?

If the AMG GT Coupe is canceled, and the Mercedes SL is currently only expected to be offered as a roadster, then will there ever be another dedicated AMG Coupe? Well, that’s a huge mystery. Back in 2019 when Lewis Hamilton visited the AMG Design Center in Sindelfingen, Germany, a clay model of an extra-sporty coupe was secretly teased in a video about the visit. Outlets like Motor1 even went as far as to design their own digital rendering based on what they saw in the video. What that clay model is remains to be seen, but it would make financial sense for AMG to build a coupe version of the SL – even if it carries a different name – to spread out the costs and increase profits from its expenses. After all, roadsters and convertibles aren’t exactly the most popular body styles these days, and AMG has dumped a ton of money into revamping Sport Leicht. All that effort and money spent doesn’t seem feasible for a singular model.

But, this also doesn’t mean it’s a guarantee and there may never be a successor to the AMG GT Coupe.

Wait, what?

That’s right! As of the time of this writing, there hasn’t been a single spy shot of an SL coupe or any other type of sporty coupe akin to what could be seen as a successor to the AMG GT Coupe. Furthermore, Mercedes is supposedly cutting downs its two-door offerings and is even planning to merge the C-Class Coupe and Convertible with the E-Class Coupe and Convertible, a model that could go by the name “CLE.” The one thing we can say for sure is that given the lack of spy shots, the lack of official word from Mercedes, and the fact that the AMG GT is just now going out of production, a new AMG Coupe will be at least a couple of years away if not more.
