Aston Martin just discontinued the Vanquish in order to make way for a new DBS model, a switch it originally made back in 2007. But unlike then, the Vanquish won't live in the shadows until second-gen DBS Superleggera goes out of production. Instead, Aston Martin wants to use the name for its upcoming mid-engined supercar.

That's the word from Aston Martin's chief creative officer Mark Reichmann, who hinted that the supercar set to slot below the Valkyrie might use the Vanquish name. “Without saying yes, that sounds like a plausible solution for a beautiful name like Vanquish,” he told the media at the DBS Superleggera launch in Germany.

Although this isn't confirmation that the supercar will actually get the name, Reichmann added that the Vanquish badge won't stay in retirement for too long. "Vanquish is a very special name, and we’ve got some pretty special cars coming."

The Vanquish name was first used on a stand-alone car in 2001 when it replaced the Virage. The first-gen grand tourer remained in production until 2007, when it was discontinued to make way for the DBS. The nameplate returned in 2012 and was again retired in 2018 in favor of the DBS Superleggera.

Speaking of the upcoming mid-engined supercar, Reichmann said that it will go against the Ferrari 488 GTB, McLaren 720S, Lamborghini Huracan, and the Audi R8. He also said that "it will be the most beautiful mid-engined car on the road... with all the learnings from Valkyrie."
