As if the Bentley Bentayga isn’t opulent enough on its own, Bentley is throwing in a new feature that’s going to help owners keep their valuables in a secure location. Courtesy of the Mulliner personalization division, Bentayga owners can now avail of a biometric stowage space in the SUV’s center console that can only be opened through capacitive fingerprint sensor technology. Fingerprint technology on the Bentayga? All in a day’s work for Mulliner.

The storage space is small, but it is state-of-the-art. It features an aluminum cover, and the opposite side of the cover is padded to minimize the possibility of your valuables getting damaged. It also features a pair of USB ports and auxiliary charging devices that can connect to the infotainment’s Apple CarPlay support. Its most prominent feature, though, is the capacitive fingerprint scanner that locks up the little locker to keep its contents safe and secure. As an added feature, the tech allows owners to authorize multiple fingerprint signatures so that other people besides the owner can have access to it.

On the one hand, this kind of feature is something you can expect from Bentley. The British luxury brand is known for being a little too over-the-top with some of the features it puts on its vehicles. This fingerprint locker definitely counts as one of them. I understand the purpose of one, but is it really necessary to have on a car like the Bentayga that’s already secure enough on its own?

On the other hand, you can also argue that a storage space that can only be accessed through fingerprint technology is just what the doctor ordered for the Bentley Bentayga. The $230,000 SUV is going to attract a lot of attention, and there’s the possibility that it could catch the attention of people with nefarious intentions. Having storage space that can only be accessed through fingerprint technology helps keep your most valuable of items in a safe and secure place. At the very least, you also won’t have to worry about losing your keys to access this space. All you need is your finger to do that, and I’m pretty sure that’s going to be pretty hard to lose.

Ultimately, this is Mulliner at its finest. Bentley’s personalization division is known for creating some off-the-cuff features for the Bentayga SUV, and this is no exception. Remember the one-off Bentayga it created specifically for fly fishing? How about the one-off Falconry Edition that was created for the purpose of falconry? There are no limits to what Mulliner is capable of doing, and this new storage space with capacitive fingerprint sensor technology is just the latest example of that.
