The BMW 6 Series Coupe has been in our lives for six years. That’s a long time for any one specific model in this business that turns over models faster than it takes me to cook scrambled eggs. You’d think then that when the time comes for the 6 Series Coupe to get axed, BMW would at least say something about, right? Well, either BMW forgot, or it just didn’t think it was newsworthy enough; the 6 Series Coupe was actually discontinued three months ago. No announcements. No press releases. No posts on social media. Nothing.

The German automaker’s decision to stop building the 6 Series Coupe didn’t just fly under the radar; it never even flew because BMW didn’t give it a chance to. It’s only now, three months later, that we’ve caught wind of it and it probably wouldn’t have even happened had a BMW spokesman not confirmed to Road & Track that the 6 Series Coupe did in fact silently go out of production back in February 2017. To be fair, BMW has said in the past that it planned on discontinuing the 6 Series lineup and bring back the 8 Series to take its place as the company’s flagship model. But nothing about those announcements indicated that the company would axe the 6 Series Coupe quietly without even telling somebody about it. It had a good run and it probably deserved at least a passing mention.

Out with the old, in with the new

I know BMW has the right to withhold this type of news, but a heads-up would’ve still been nice, especially for a car like the 6 Series Coupe that had a pretty good, six-year run. The good news, at least for now, is that the 6 Series Gran Coupe and the 6 Series Convertible are still alive and well. But that might not be the case in the long run now that spy shots of the 8 Series have been popping up and left and right. Let’s just hope that when the Gran Coupe and convertible models do join the coupe on the shelves, we’ll at least hear about it in the moment.

As for the 8 Series, coupe and convertible body styles of the model dressed in heavy camouflage have been making the test rounds recently. That should at least strengthen the growing belief that BMW is pushing forward with bringing this nameplate back for the first time since 1999. I’m actually excited for this because the last 8 Series to go into production was a dream car of mine when I was a pimple-faced teenager. I’d love to see what BMW does with the model and I’m sure that I’m not the only one that’s going to have high expectations for what will most likely be the company’s new flagship model.

BMW has yet to drop relevant info about the model, but previous reports have mentioned that the prototypes were being tested with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine and a version of the automaker’s high-performance diesel engine. There’s also a lot of momentum on the possibility of seeing either a hybrid or an electrified 8 Series. On top of all the speculation surrounding the eventual engines that will be used on the returning model, let’s not forget that BMW has already filed trademark application on a number of 8 Series-related names, including 825, 830, 835, 850, 845, 860, M850, and of course, M8. The 8 Series is coming, folks. It’s just a matter of when it’s going to come.

With regards to the 6 Series Coupe, I hope it still comes back in some form or fashion in the future. I’m not going to jump on that bandwagon just yet, but still, anything’s possible in the auto industry, especially for a company like BMW. There is, after all, a rumor going around that despite the eventual end of the 6 Series line, it could still make a comeback in the form of a premium 5 Series model. Start crossing those fingers now then.
