There shouldn’t be any doubt that Bugatti ended 2019 on a high note. Its 1,577-horsepower Chiron Super Sport 300+ went past the 300 mph barrier and it also spawned the likes of La Voiture Noire and Centodieci.

U.K.’s Autocar had a chat with Bugatti CEO Stephan Winkelmann, who revealed that the Chiron will be further used as a base for future Bugatti models. Think in the lines of Divo and the above-mentioned Voiture Noire and Centodieci rather than mere special editions.

What is Bugatti Planning for 2020 and Beyond?

Nothing that comes out of Bugatti’s assembly plant in Molsheim, France, is ordinary. Everyone knows this much. And while the company has had its way with special editions in the past - the Veyron got a bucketload of those as we’re sure you can remember, it won’t go down the same path with its current superstar, the Chiron.

Speaking to Autocar, Bugatti’s Stephan Winkelmann explained that the Chiron is a very versatile platform in the sense that it’s suited for a go-very-fast vehicle such as the Super Sport 300+ but also for a car more focused on “downforce, handling and weight reduction.” In other words, the Chiron can be tweaked into a track-aimed tool, as is the case of the Divo.

What’s more, Mr. Winkelmann was also keen to hint that “we are working on something different ,” but didn’t offer further details. What he was adamant about, however, had to do with Bugatti’s reluctance to offer more special editions for the Chiron. So no more of that, thank God. But the possibility of a new Chiron derivative is indeed enough to keep us on our toes, so we’ll definitely be on the lookout in the coming months.

Elsewhere in the interview, . What’s more, when asked about digitalization, the CEO responded that to stay true to the Bugatti creed, it will have to touch on features like “weather forecast and rear-traffic situation” before anything else.

Although there’ve been rumors about Bugatti joining the SUV bandwagon, we don’t think the carmaker will look to adapt the Chiron platform to such a vehicle. Sure, the possibility of a Bugatti-branded high-luxury SUV is still in the air, but at this point, we like Bugatti’s lineup just how it is now, with the likes of Chiron, Centodieci, Divo, and La Voiture Noire.
