Chevy is spreading its wings and aiming for track superiority

If you’re about tired of hearing news about the 2020 Chevy C8 Corvette, well, this is only the beginning. We still have, at the very least, the C8 Corvette ZR1 and the C8 Corvette Z06, the latter of which is set to make its debut next and was just spotted sitting next to a 991-gen Porsche 911 GT2 RS – the proverbial best of the best on the track. What does this mean for the Corvette Z06?

Chevy Takes Aim at Porsche, and the Z06 Could be the Golden Gun

A social media post made by Brandon Byers on Facebook has shed light on just what Chevy has planned for the C8 Corvette Z06 – taking a real fight to Porsche on the track.

Make no mistake that car sitting next to the C8 in the post above is the don mega; it is the Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

This is the car that managed to lap the Nurburgring in 6 minutes and 47 seconds – a figure that makes it one of the fastest track-ready production cars that money can buy. Chevy tried to take it on before with the last-gen C7 Corvette ZR1 and, despite have a 55-horsepower advantage, that puppy couldn’t even break the seven-second barrier.

If Chevy is really looking to lay waste to the 991-gen 911 GT2 RS, then it has to compete with nothing short of aerodynamic witchcraft, some of the world’s best suspension tuning, and 700 cold-hearted ponies all sitting on top of the rear wheels. This $293,000 monster will get you to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds on the way to 211 mph. And, this explains why all of the recent spy shots of the Corvette have been so heavily camouflaged.

With the Z06 serving as Chevy’s general track weapon in the past, it’s always been privy to heavy suspension tweaks, more power, and a massive rear wing. However, if the C8 Corvette Z06 will dominate the Nurburgring, it’ll need some serious aerodynamic enhancements too, all of which are covered by the heavy padding and camo. The real question now is: How Much Does Chevy Have to Do To Beat the GT2 RS around the track?

Upgrading the C8 Corvette Stingray to Track-Dominating Performance

The base-model C8 Corvette Stingray has a 6.2-liter V-8 that’s good for 495 horsepower, 470 pound-feet of torque, and a 2.9-second sprint to 60 mph. It also tops out at a surprisingly low 190 mph. That’s nowhere near good enough for the Z06, let alone a car that’s going to compete with the 911 GT2 RS and set track records. That’s probably why the Z06 is expected to have a twin-turbo V-8. It’s reportedly based on Cadillac’s Blackwing V-8 and may deliver 700 horsepower or more. It will be the quickest Corvette Z06 to date, but will it be fast enough to compete with the best of the best?

Well, early estimates put the C8 Corvette Z06 at hitting 60 mph in 2.6 to 2.7 seconds and topping out around the 200 mph range. With a quick-shifting DCT, the right aerodynamic wizardry, some weight savings, and the right suspension, the C8 Z06 should pose a serious threat to anything hitting the track this year. If this recent social post proves anything, it’s that Chevy is at least looking in the right direction, and now we just need to see if it can deliver.
