With the presentation of the Purosangue, Ferrari finally entered the booming SUV market. The company came definitely late, but from what we have seen so far, well prepared. Unlike the company´s main competitors like Lamborghini and Aston Martin, for which SUV models account for a majority of their sales, Ferrari wants the Purosangue to make up no more than 20 percent of its annual production

Ferrari Limits Purosangue Production in the Name of Exclusivity

During the last few years, Ferrari´s sales scratched consistently at the 10,000-unit mark, making it a carmaker with relatively low production numbers. Taking into consideration that a sports car manufacturer wants to keep its exclusivity, this strategy definitely makes sense. If you estimate sales of Ferrari of 10,000 to 12,000 units per year during the decade, this would be equal to just around 2,000 to 2,400 units of Purosangue manufactured per year.

Lamborghini, the company sold 8,405 units of the Urus in 2021, with demand rising. This is up to four times the maximum yearly capacity of the Purosangue and should be nowhere near the demand for the super SUV. Because of this situation, Ferrari`s chief commercial and marketing officer, Enrico Galliera, already confirmed that Ferrari risks not being able to satisfy the demand and may even have to close the order intake very soon.

Power and Performance

The Purosangue debuted with a naturally aspirated 6,5-liter V12 engine with 715 horsepower (533 kilowatts) and 528 pound-feet (716 Newton meters) of torque. With no competitor offering a similar engine in the segment, this gave another big push to the pre-orders of the Purosangue, or at least that's what Ferrari says, anyway.

However, it is very likely that Ferrari is going to add smaller engines to the lineup in the near future. This could be the hybrid V-8 of the SF90 that makes up to 986 horsepower (735 kilowatts) or the electrified V-6 engine of the 296 GTB with up to 818 horsepower (610 kilowatts).

Purosangue Pricing and Availability

Ferrari is set to start the production of the Purosangue by the end of 2022r. Deliveries are therefore expected to start at the beginning of 2023. Order books open at $393,000 with Ferrari prioritizing current owners over buyers new to the brand.
